Gavin Creel, the Broadway star famous for his roles in Hello, Dolly! and Waitress, has passed away at the age of 48.

According to an obituary from his representative, Matt Polk, Creel was known for his vibrant energy and passion on stage, as well as his dedication to advocacy and community efforts off stage. He had been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of sarcoma in July 2024 and had been undergoing treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering.

Originally from Findlay, Ohio, Creel made his Broadway debut in 2002, originating the role of Jimmy Smith in Thoroughly Modern Millie, which earned him his first Tony nomination. He went on to become a prominent figure in both comedic and dramatic roles in major Broadway and West End productions.

Creel received his second Tony nomination in 2009 for his portrayal of Claude in the revival of Hair, and in 2014, he won an Olivier Award for his role as Elder Price in The Book of Mormon. He won his first Tony in 2017 for playing Cornelius Hackl in the revival of Hello, Dolly!, alongside Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce. In his acceptance speech, he credited the University of Michigan's musical theater program for transforming his life.

Hannah Waddingham, a fellow stage actress and star of Ted Lasso, expressed her shock and sadness over Creel's passing in an Instagram post, saying, "I will never forget you as long as I breathe."

Creel played Dr. Pomatter in the 2019 Broadway production of Waitress and reprised the role in London in 2020. He and Sara Bareilles, a close friend and collaborator, reunited for a performance in Into the Woods on Broadway in 2022.

The obituary concluded by highlighting Creel's joyful spirit, integrity, and generous nature, noting that he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his parents, Nancy and James Creel, his sisters, Ward, and his dog, Nina.
